Physicist have for quite a while hogged the limelight on the next piece of cosmic knowledge - most recently the Higgs Bosun. But they haven't actually delivered on the kind of big affordances that most people really want, like fusion energy, despite many billions of dollars, and countless PhDs.

So, along comes Angela Belcher and her abalone shell, with a few viruses and bacteria in tow, and demonstrates how to grow a battery, and a few more things, like photosynthesis.

Looks like the physicists will have to move aside and make way for the nano-biologists (or is that a new bio-physics hybrid?), if we are going to make crack the 'room-temperature energy generator' puzzle.
