When is a probe a probe?

Barthes writes that for semiotic animals (mainly us) "every use becomes a sign of itself". And that means that every new use can become a new sign.

However ...

1. Some uses are locked-in, sutured, sewn-up, patented (add to taste), which rather precludes new uses.

2. Probes face the other way, so "every probe becomes a sign of a new probe". Which means that probes (like interesting, creative apps) are fundamentally open to new possibilities (as well as being useful).

Thank you Roland!
